Unsharp #01
An attempt to stimulate the viewer’s imagination. In his essay Between Imitation and Simulation – The Blurred Image from 2006, Bernd Hüppauf dedicates himself to the phenomenon of the blurred image and its reception. According to Hüppauf, blurring is ‘a visual simulation that violates the rules of imitation and documentation’. The blurring removes the uniqueness of the image (see Hüppauf, p. 271).

The dispute over the meaning of the detail and the sharpness that grew out of this controversy is not only based on a pure media debate, but also has its origin in the epistemological question of whether the truth is in the objectively measurable (sharpness) or in the essence of the thing (the Fuzziness) can be found. Where the blurring affects not only parts of the picture but the entire photo, it is primarily about the transfer of a feeling or impression. The object is replaced by its representation or symbol. The image becomes a symbol and photography is elevated to a universal language due to the basic visual constitution of the world (cf. Stiegler, pp. 19-22).
